And to be fair, what Rohan Vos and his incredible team have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. They’ve built a world-class brand — “The Pride of Africa” — that embodies the golden age of travel while keeping a vital piece of history alive. A quick search online proves it: Rovos Rail is synonymous with elegance, romance, and the rhythmic magic of rail travel across Africa’s breathtaking landscapes.

But here’s the delightful surprise — Rovos isn’t the only steam rail experience out there! As I started exploring further, I discovered a growing community of passionate people and organizations across South Africa who are working tirelessly to revitalize and preserve steam rail heritage. From short nostalgic trips to full-day excursions, these experiences are often beautifully affordable and bursting with authentic charm.

It’s heartening to see how the love for steam travel continues to inspire a new generation of enthusiasts — people who not only appreciate the engineering marvels of the past but also recognize their cultural and historical importance.

South Africa’s Steam Rail Revival

Across the country, several dedicated groups have taken up the torch to keep steam travel alive — each with its own unique flavour and following.

🚂 Ceres Rail Company (Western Cape)

Based in Cape Town, Ceres Rail has captured the hearts of families and photographers alike. Their weekend journeys through the Cape Winelands — particularly the scenic run to Elgin — are a treat for the senses. With vintage coaches, a working steam locomotive, and a relaxed, festive atmosphere, it’s a perfect day out that feels like stepping back in time.
It was the power of steam that drove the expansion of the British Empire during the Victorian Era, and the Cape Colony was no exception.
The first steam-train line in the Cape was completed in 1862, and ran from Cape Town to Eerste River. Within a year, the route had been extended to include Stellenbosch and Wellington.
Gradually, a network of railway lines spread throughout the province, managed by Cape Government Railways; while in the north, the Netherlands-South African Railway Company facilitated the expansion of the railway network in the-then independent South African Republic.
By the time the four provinces merged to form a nation in 1910, an expansive national railway system had effectively been established.
The Ceres Railway track was originally built at the turn of the 20th century, starting in July 1910 and was completed in May 1912. The line was built using second-hand material.
Part of Ceres Rail Company’s mission is to help preserve and promote South African Rail Heritage, which involves restoring and refurbishing old locomotives and coaches. We love sharing this with both young and old, which is why, since 2016, we have been determined to “Let History Transport You.”

🚂 Atlantic Rail – Garden Route

Atlantic Rail, now officially known as Southern Cape Railway, offers vintage steam and diesel train excursions in South Africa's Garden Route. Owned and operated by the Ekström brothers, the company provides nostalgic rail journeys in the greater Mossel Bay area.

Born and bred in Mossel Bay with a shared passion for steam locomotives & trains, the three Ekström brothers identified the need to afford the locals and holidaymakers the opportunity to experience a nostalgic train journey of a now bygone era, behind a restored steam locomotive.
After years of negotiations and discussions, they are now able to offer the Southern Cape an authentic steam train experience in the greater Mossel Bay area.

Popular excursions

Hartenbos to Great Brak River

This is a scenic, 2.5-hour round-trip along the coast.
Departures: Multiple daily trips are offered on selected dates, particularly during the December holiday season.
Route: Departing from Hartenbos Station, the train crosses coastal bridges with sweeping views of the sea and countryside.
Stop: There is a 60-minute stop at the picturesque Great Brak River station

Albertinia Rail and Safari Trip

This is a special full-day tour that includes a safari experience.
Dates: This tour runs on specific dates, such as Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Route: The train, pulled by diesel locomotives, travels from Hartenbos to Albertinia Station. Passengers then transfer to the Bon Game Private Reserve for activities.
Bon Game activities: The reserve offers refreshments and optional activities, including game drives and hovercraft trips, which require separate booking.

🚂 Umgeni Steam Railway (KwaZulu-Natal)

Along the lush hills of KZN, the Umgeni Steam Railway operates one of the most scenic short runs in the country, from Kloof to Inchanga. This non-profit organization has done wonders to restore both the railway and the surrounding heritage buildings, making every trip feel like a celebration of local craftsmanship and pride.

🚂 New Central Cape Railway

The Robertson Wine Train, operated by the New Cape Central Railway (NCCR), is a scenic steam train journey through the Robertson Wine Valley. It offers passengers a unique experience featuring local wine tasting, food like pizzas and cheese platters for purchase, and scenic views of the Cape Central Valley. The train departs from the Robertson Railway Station and is a popular tourist activity that combines history, wine, and beautiful scenery.

Key features
Scenic route:
The train travels through the vineyards and mountains of the Cape Central Valley, providing beautiful views.
Wine tasting:
Passengers can enjoy wine tasting, with different carriages often representing various wineries.
Food and drink:
Onboard food, such as pizzas and cheese platters, is available for purchase.
Steam train experience:
The journey offers a "timeless" experience on a steam train, evoking a bygone era.
Departure and duration:
The train departs from the Robertson Railway Station and the trip typically lasts about 3 to 4 hours.
What to expect
Booking: It is recommended to book in advance, and some sources suggest booking in groups of four.
Cost: Pricing varies, with one source mentioning a price of R600 per person, which includes wine tasting.
Amenities: Passengers get a designated seat and can enjoy the wine and views from their spot.
Unique experiences: Some special trips have been organized, such as a journey to Matjiesfontein.

Keeping the Fire Burning

These operators, along with countless volunteers and railway enthusiasts, are ensuring that South Africa’s steam legacy remains alive and accessible. What started as a niche passion project has grown into a nationwide movement — a reminder that heritage can be both preserved and enjoyed.
Hats off to everyone involved — the engineers, volunteers, restorers, and dreamers — who are quite literally keeping the fire burning. Through continued public interest and support, we can ensure that the soulful whistle of the steam locomotive continues to echo across South Africa’s valleys and veld for generations to come.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Out & About Africa</rights>

Out & About Investigating

Cape Leopard vs Savannah Leopard: Southern Africa’s Spotted Giants

Nestled high in South Africa’s Cape Fold Mountains, the Cape Leopard this elusive mountain cat is the same species (Panthera pardus) as the familiar savannah leopard, but centuries of isolation have made it smaller and highly specialized.

Cape males average only about 35 kg (females ~20 kg)– roughly half the weight of Savannah males (60–70 kg) and females (35–40 kg).

A Cape leopard will usually vanish into the mountainous terrain or brush long before a human could get close.
Cape and savannah leopards occupy very different homes.
Savannah leopard lives in warm dry bushveld and woodland.

Physical Traits and Behaviour
Apart from size, the two leopards look very similar – coat colour and rosette pattern show no obvious sharp differences. Both have the stocky, strong bodies and powerful jaws. All leopards are solitary and largely nocturnal hunters.

They scent-mark and roam alone at night, communicating by roars or rasping growls. In the cool mountain air, Cape leopards sometimes move at dawn or dusk, but they also favour nighttime. Savannah leopards are similarly secretive.

In both habitats the leopard’s climbing skill is legendary. They are arguably the strongest climbers of the big catsMales (and even females) will heft an ungulate kill up a tree branch to keep it from hyenas or jackals. Cape cats hauling a duiker kid into a hakea bush, and Kruger leopards dragging a young impala up an acacia.

Diet and Hunting
Leopards are opportunistic carnivores, but prey choices reflect habitat. Cape leopards mainly hunt rock hyraxes (dassies), klipspringer and grysbok antelope, porcupines, and the occasional aardvark or young baboon. Typically their prey weighs under 20 kg. In dry seasons, Cape leopards will also scavenge dead sheep or livestock – not by preference, but due to prey scarcity.
Savannah leopards in contrast prey on larger and more varied quarry. Their staple is medium-sized antelope (20–80 kg). Impalas (adult and fawn) often top the list, with Thomson’s gazelles, warthogs and small antelope (dik-dik, steenbok, reedbuck) also common. A prudent leopard may even tackle young wildebeest or buffalo calves.
Both leopard types will eat birds, rodents, or reptiles when hungry. But for example, Kruger leopards have been seen preying on baboons, bushpigs, and occasionally the calves of zebra or wildebeest. Unusual victims like small kudu or even a young giraffe are almost exclusively a savannah phenomenon.

Home Range and Movement
Cape leopards roam across huge territories. In the wild Cape mountains, a male leopard’s home range can be 200–1,000 km². He’ll patrol rocky ridges, cliffs and ravines to find enough food.
By comparison, a male leopard in Kruger National Park usually confines itself to about 25–50 km² (females much less). In practice, this means Cape leopards may trek 10–20 km in a single night. One collared male (“Malcolm”) was recorded covering an incredible ~1,190 km² in a few months. The savannah leopard covers far less distance each night, but still marks overlapping territories with neighbours.
A consequence is that Cape leopards frequently cross private farmland and even public roads. Their broad patrols enable finding scarce prey but also expose them to human dangers. Savanna leopards, with smaller ranges, remain mostly inside large reserves or contiguous wildlands (though they too sometimes wander into settlements. (especially in areas where Reserves and parks border villages).

Encounters with People
Both leopard types are reclusive and avoid conflict. Cape leopards especially are known to be very wary of humans; they typically freeze or bolt at the first hint of danger. no unprovoked Cape leopard attack on a person has ever been documented.
Savannah leopards behave similarly in the wild: shy and alert. As one ranger quips, the only time a leopard “talks” to humans is by leaving paw prints on a car hood at night!
Livestock conflict differs between habitats. Cape leopards rarely target farm animals unless food is utterly scarce. If a sheep or goat is taken on a remote farm, it is usually an opportunistic kill (often blamed on leopards but occasionally the real culprit is a jackal or dog).
By contrast, savannah leopards are more often labelled “problem animals”. Studies note that most reported leopard predation in Africa involves animals kept in simple night kraals.

Retaliation is common: frustrated farmers sometimes shoot or poison any cat seen near their stock. Conservationists therefore stress better husbandry (guard dogs, improved bomas) to keep livestock safe without killing leopards.

Habitat Differences and Viewing Spots
Cape Environment: The Cape’s fynbos mountains are fire-prone, nutrient-poor and steep. Vegetation is dense but low (heath and shrub), and true forests are rare (mainly protected kloof pockets). Leopards here use caves, hollow logs, and dense pine groves for shelter. Apart from the Cape leopard, few large predators remain: no lions unless in reserves.
For eco-tourists, the best bet to glimpse Cape leopards is via special tours or camera-trap projects. The Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) runs guided trips in the Cederberg Wilderness and Boland Mountains (Bainskloof, Grabouw area). Sightings can happen on remote mountain drives or even on hiking trails (though they are exceedingly brief). Besides Cederberg, small numbers roam places like the Swartberg and Jonkershoek reserves. (Local farmers on the Cape Peninsula and Overberg also report leopard tracks – indeed, “wild leopard” populations exist in nearly all the highland areas of the province.)
Savannah Environment: Here the leopards are widespread across the Southern African savannahs and woodlands. Kruger National Park (South Africa) is famed for them: over a thousand may inhabit the park’s 19,600 km². Other good spots include Hluhluwe–iMfolozi (KwaZulu-Natal), Phinda and Thanda reserves (Zulu coast), and Pilanesberg and Madikwe ((North Western South Africa)
Further afield, they thrive in Namibia’s Etosha National Park and Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and even in the more arid Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (where they share dunes with brown hyenas). Another hotspot for leopard sightings is South Luangwa Park in Zambia.
Tourists often see savannah leopards in daylight resting classically on shady branches in trees, or enjoying a leisurely stroll on a road.
In all cases, the viewing style differs: in the Cape you’re lucky to spot one at night with a thermal scope, whereas in a safari jeep in Kruger it’s more often the leopard that spots you from an acacia above the road!

Conservation and Threats
All African leopards are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, meaning their overall numbers are decreasing. The Cape population is particularly precarious: fragmentation by farms and houses, plus roadkills and dog attacks, continually chip away at their numbers. Surveys suggest fewer than 1,000 Cape leopards remain. Illegal wire snares set for small game are a serious hidden killer. Invasive predators (dogs) and too-frequent fires can starve leopards by depleting prey or den sites.
On the savannah, threats are similar in cause if not in scale. Habitat loss (fencing, logging, agriculture) and a shrinking prey base (from overhunting and illegal bushmeat trade) have reduced leopard range by roughly 30% in recent decades. Retaliatory killings are common near farms, and trophy hunting still occurs under controversial regulations in some countries. Poaching for skins or body parts is less intense for leopards than for lions or rhinos, but it does happen.
The good news is many protection efforts are underway. In the Western Cape, the Cape Leopard Trust, SANParks and several NGOs focus on research and outreach. CLT advocates predator-friendly farming (guard dogs, donkeys and predator-proof kraals) rather than shooting the cats.
In Kruger and other savannah parks, rangers conduct anti-poaching patrols and support community projects. For example, local conservancies build sturdy enclosures for livestock and
offer compensation when losses do occur. International groups (like the African Wildlife Foundation) help fund GPS-tracking studies and assisted-breeding research to keep the genetic pool healthy.
Tourism itself is a big ‘protector’ of especially the savannah leopard. Reserves, private and national both know that leopard sightings are rare and thus a big draw card for guests.
By combining ecological science with boots-on-the-ground stewardship, South Africa aims to keep both its mountain cats and bush leopards thriving for the next generation of nature lovers.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2025, Out & About Africa</rights>

Navigating the Digital Nomad Visa in South Africa

The Digital Nomad Visa in South Africa offers an exciting opportunity for remote workers who wish to live in a dynamic, culturally rich environment while maintaining employment with a company outside of South Africa.
The fossil site of Langebaanweg is located in the West Coast Fossil Park (WCFP), approximately 150 km north of Cape Town (a 1.5 hour drive), and is world-renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved fossil faunal remains that date to the terminal Miocene/early Pliocene (circa 5.2 million years ago).

A national and international team of researchers are currently unravelling the fascinating and unique history of fossils from the West Coast Fossil Park and attempting to recreate the environment and climate of the west coast some 5 million years ago. At this time many animals that are now extinct, such as saber-toothed cats, short-necked giraffes, hunting hyenas and African bears roamed the west coast which then had a more subtropical climate with lush, riverine forests and open grasslands.

A new Visitor Centre has been constructed using funds from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and now hosts a brand new exhibition hall, restaurant, shop, amphitheatre, conference, meeting and office facilities in addition to the open dig site that many past visitors are familiar with.

The WCFP is a National Heritage Site and forms part of the Cradle of Human Culture Artist's Route.

The 'Map of Africa' is an extraordinary viewpoint at Wilderness Heights. The small village of Wilderness is situated approximately 15km from George, driving on the N2 highway towards Knysna. Having traveled this road several times, I can vow it is very likely that you will see paragliders just as you have passed the Kaaimans River Bridge.

The bright and colourful paragliders, soaring against the open blues skies, make a beautiful picture. The Wilderness turn-off to the left takes you to the road that leads to Wilderness Heights. Just follow the road to the T-junction and turn left again.

The Map of Africa is a spectacular scene of mountains and forests. The Wilderness area is known for it’s vast number of rivers, lagoons and natural lakes, and here you get a clear view of the Kaaimans River Valley. It is amazing how the course of the Kaaimans River has the shape of the African continent. What a beautiful sight!

Across the road from the Map of Africa view point, is a popular paragliding launch spot. It overlooks a long stretch of wilderness beaches and from a distance you see the deep blue of the Indian Ocean. The steep heights makes it a great spot for take-off . Groups of people were sitting watching as paragliders take off - some were having a picnic and other were sunbathing in the hot sun.

Tubing the Storms River is the original experience that set the adventure scene in Tsitsikamma some 50 years ago and introduced the Storms River Gorge as one of the first iconic adventure attractions on the Garden Route. The delicate negotiation with this phenomenal river on specialized one-man inflatable river tubes takes you on an unforgettable journey through Tsitsikamma's diverse habitat.

It is the only Tsitsikamma activity that provides an experience of our pristine forests, rivers and unique coast line all in one extraordinary excursion.

If you are a history buff, an engineering enthusiast, or simply curious about the past of South Africa’s transportation system, a visit to the Outeniqua Transport Museum in George is a must. Located in the heart of the picturesque Garden Route, this museum offers a unique and immersive experience of the region’s railway and road history, showcasing a vast collection of vintage vehicles, locomotives, and other transport-related artifacts.

See the Emil Kessler, Johannesburg’s first steam locomotive, the GL Garrett with its antiquated carriages, including the original 'White Coach' in which Queen Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret slept in during their 1947 visit to South Africa, and Paul Kruger’s coach and private saloons.

The museum includes a photo gallery depicting breathtaking photos of South African steam trains, crockery and cutlery used on main line trains and in station restaurants, a collection of steam locomotive number plates and makers plates, a model train room, road motor vehicles and a private vintage car selection. You can also read some inspiring train-related poetry.

The Big Tree, Tsitsikamma

A trip to Tsitsikamma on the Southern Cape coast of South Africa will show you a side of Africa and South Africa that you never imagined existed. The name of this coastal region of South Africa is “The Garden Route” – so named for the indigenous Fynbos that is the world’s smallest and most diverse of all the floral kingdoms and the dense natural forest of the Tsitsikamma.

Standing guard over the treetop canopy in the heart of the forest is The Big Tree – an eight hundred- year-old Yellowwood. This majestic tree towers over the rest of the canopy; standing 36+m tall and with a trunk circumference of 9m – this is a giant among giants.

The Big Tree is an excellent example of a Yellowwood tree (Podocarpus latifolius). Yellowwoods are native to South Africa and are known for both their enormous size and longevity. The tree stands at a staggering height of 36.6 meters (120 feet) with a girth of 8.2 meters (27 feet) at its widest point. What’s more, Scientists believe the tree is between 600 and 800 years old!

Garden Of Eden Forest Walk, Knysna

The Garden of Eden does not really qualify as a hiking trail but because it is situated next to the N2 it is a great place to stretch your legs or to take a drive there for a relaxing stroll.

The walk follows over 1km of wooden board walks and bridges across streams and is entirely wheelchair friendly and ideal for the elderly wanting to visit the forest. There is a number of wooden benches and tables along the trail to sit, snack, picnic or enjoy your ‘padkos’. There is water and ablution facilities.

This is one of the most lush and beautiful parts of the Knysna forest and definitely a must-see when visiting the Garden Route. The major attraction is the forest itself; absolutely beautiful yellowwood trees, thick green foliage and fresh, trickling streams.

A superb example of Wet Highforest, an unusual forest-type with many examples of tall Stinkwood (Ocotea bullata), Kalander (Podocarpus jalcaus), Wit-els (Playlophus trifoliatus) and other tree species of the moister forest types.

This site was first opened in 1926.

The Cango Caves is a cultural and natural landmark in South Africa. The 20 million year-old Cango Caves system consists of a series of hidden chambers cut deep into a thick limestone rock layer. It is situated in the Swartberg Mountains, 30 kilometres north of Oudtshoorn, in South Africa’s Western Cape Province.
The Heritage Tour is an easy walk through the first six largest and most spectacular halls and continuing through to the "African Drum room".

This tour commences with information on the real discoverers and inhabitants of the cave and then winds its way through the rest of the Caves’ cultural and historical heritage.

A comfortable walk through the most majestic of the cave chambers. Experienced and knowledgeable guides will accompany you on this journey of discovery and knowledge. Around 60 minutes is required to complete the tour.
Wear sensible footwear and light clothing. The temperature in the Caves remains a constant 20°C (60 °F )

For the more adventurous tourist, you can opt in for the Adventure option - a challenging tour, with exciting passages and narrow tunnels, requiring a degree of fitness. For lean people only!

One should also try to steer away from unsustainable novelties such as rhino horn, elephant ivory and shark teeth. The white rhino is near threatened and the black rhino is critically endangered. Southern Africa is home to many a skilled craftsman, be it working with wires or wood carving. A gemstone or intricately carved pendant would make a much more thoughtful gift than a tooth on a necklace. It would also represent the beauty and values in Southern Africa far better, as you wouldn’t be taking anything away from the beauty of the country by supporting poaching and other unsustainable practices.

Examples of sustainable traditional souvenirs to buy in South Africa include but are not limited to: Xhosa Shweshwe fabric (traditionally worn by Xhosa women; can be found as bags, cushion covers, clothes and sheets of fabric), Rooibos Tea, Homemade baskets and beadwork crafts, Amarula liqueur and Ardmore ceramic art. Gift shops are extremely common in southern Africa making these goods easy to come by, as well as most being readily available on street corners or at local markets being sold by local vendors.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2024, Out & About Africa</rights>

Health & Midfulness Travel in 2024

Delve into the myriad benefits of health travel and why it's a trend that's here to stay.

The below tips are based on travellers travelling from South Africa as the country of origin.

Remember that African border crossings are usually busy and almost always chaotic. Allow plenty of time to get through immigration before the border post closes for the night.

Think of Border crossings as part of the Travel experience - you will have many funny and frustrating stories to tell :-)

Always remain polite and helpful. Immigration officers have the last say on whether you can enter a country, or not!

Have your passport and exact cash amount ready for the type of visa you are purchasing. Please do not rely on card payments as these are seldom working at all ports of entry. The best currencies to carry are US Dollars (small denominations) and South African Rands(ZAR)

Have patience and don't expect to rush through the process...Once you have accepted this fact - you'll be surprised how smoothly things go.

If you are in a rented vehicle, make sure the Rental Agency shows you the relevant documentation needed...ie, vehicle registration, VIN, engine and chassis numbers match the documents you've been given. You will also need to know where these numbers appear on the car in case you're asked to show the immigration officer.

If your chosen destination requires an International Driving Permit, be aware that you will need to apply for this in your home country.

Expect to pay several fees at the border. This usually includes a Temporary Import Permit, while several countries require you to purchase insurance from a third-party company with an office at the border post. Try to research the correct fees in advance so that you aren't taken advantage of.

Certified copies should be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths. You can usually get this done at a police station.

Required Documentation - General

Traveling internationally with a vehicle involves plenty of documentation and requirements change from one country to the next. Wherever you go, you will need a valid passport and if relevant, a Visa. You will need a valid driver’s license, and possibly an International Driving Permit (IDP). Original vehicle registration and license papers (or certified copies) will certainly be required. If you're driving your own vehicle and it's financed, you will need a certified letter from the bank giving you permission to take it abroad. If it is rented, your rental company will need to provide similar documentation. Some countries ask for a police clearance certificate while others require third party insurance.

Botswana

When self-driving into Botswana from neighboring countries give yourself enough time to clear customs and immigration at border posts, so you can get to your destination on time.Always remember that there are two crossings at each border control point, an exit and an entry. Ensure that you have sufficient time to cross both borders.

Also remember to make sure that you have the correct vehicle papers before you get to the border control point.

1. Malaria-Free National Park Safari Areas

Pilanesberg National Park
Addo Elephant National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park lies in the North of the country which is known as the highveld(highlands - Approximately 1500m above sea level).
Experience the Big 5 animals and all the other African predators and prey in this relatively small but well stocked National Reserve.
There are various lodges in and around the Park to cater for different budgets.
Only 3 hours from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. So it is also possible to do day visits to the Park.

In the Southern part of South Africa, in the Eastern Cape Province, lies the Addo Elephant National Park. Addo is also home to the Big 5 and is, as the name implies known for the many herds of African elephant that call this Park their home. As Addo is very close to the Indian Ocean, it lends itself to do a combination of beach and bush holiday. Many lodges and Guesthouses surround the Park and has easy access for daily Game drives.

Both these malaria free Parks also are the habitat of 2 of the elusive lesser-known animals:
The shy and endangered nocturnal Pangolin and the ferocious and tough Honey Badger. To be able to view any of these 2 animals is a once in a life-time experience.

2. Cradle of Human Kind

Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves

Maropeng is the official visitors centre for the Cradle Of Humankind, a cave-strewn area around 50km north west of Johannesburg where some of the world's most significant hominid discoveries have been made. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, fossils continue to be found here.
The Sterkfontein Caves, where the remains of Little Foot, Mrs Ples and other famous fossils were found.
An extraordinary find was revealed to the world on September 10, 2015 and the implications for what we currently know about human evolution are amazing. Scientists have learned from the fossil remains that homo naledi looked fairly similar to us homo sapiens with similarly-sized hands and feet, although the homo naledi brain was probably only about the size of an orange. The bones are estimated to be between 230,000 and 330,000 years old, making homo naledi a contemporary of homo sapiens.
It is close to Johannesburg and perfect for day visits. There are also hotels nearby.

3. Whale watching & Marine life

Hermanus – Is considered one of the very best places in the world to do land based Whale watching. The Season for the whale activity, stretches from June – November. They come in close in the protected bays to give birth and rest before they travel back to the Southern Oceans.
Not only whales, but this area is also home to the Great White sharks, Cape Fur seals, Penguins and thousands of Dolphins.
Close enough to Cape Town as well as the Wine areas of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, for day trips. Hermanus also has many wonderful hotels and guesthouses.

4. Namaqualand Flowers

The Namaqualand Flower route stretches on the North-western side of South Africa. Arid, semi-desert area that comes to life in the most spectacular time during Springtime. The rest of the year this area is dry and dusty but come August/September and the landscape is transformed into a vast area of incredible colour. These wild flowers splash the coutry side with more colours than you can imagine. It is a short period of time but definitely not to be missed.
The Namaqualand Flower Route lies roughly 5 hours north of Cape Town and the real flower show belongs to a series of drives that centre on the towns of Garies, Springbok, Kamieskroon and Port Nolloth.

5. Garden Route

Adventure Activities

A trip to South Africa is not complete until you have visited the beautiful Garden Route. This area stretches along the Southern coastline of the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces. Ranging from semi-arid Fynbs to beautiful lush Yellow wood forests. Mountains, Valleys beaches and woodlands, this is the ideal environment for a myriad of activities, including, gentle hikes along the coastline, tree top canopy tours, kayaking on lagoons or in the ocean. Shark cage diving with great White Sharks, or snorkelling with seals. World record 214m bungy jumping, learning to sail, Canyoning and abseiling in the valleys and rivers or bird watching on the estuaries. Zipine over the ocean. Go fishing on the beach or in the Ocean on a chartered boat. Do a Safari or go horseriding with elephants and Rhino’s. The choices are there, and yours to make.

6. Bo Kaap

Colourful Culture

Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, Table mountain, on the fringe of the city centre of Cape Town, and formerly known as the Malay Quarter, the Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves. These people were known as Cape Malays, and were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape.
To this day, the houses are a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, in distinctive multi-coloured rows on steeply cobbled roads. The choice of colour is said to be attributed to the fact that while on lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was eventually lifted, and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, all the houses were painted bright colours by their owners as an expression of their freedom.
A must-do is a traditional Cape Malay meal at one of the restaurants, or a Cape Malay cooking course with one of the expert locals. Recipes date back centuries and are a spicy mix of Middle Eastern and Dutch styles of cooking, usually consisting of fruit, spices, vegetables and meat.

7. Battlefield Routes - Kwazulu Natal

Worldwide, land and territories were fought over, won and lost! South Africa is no different. War is never a good thing, but it is good to remember those that fought and died for what they believed in…or were forced to believe in!
Kwa-Zulu Natal province has many such battlefields, ranging from the Zulu wars to the wars between the Boers(Afrikaner Farmers) and the British Empire. There are many different routes and Battlefields – some have monuments and remembrances, others have just ghosts and legends…But they are worth visiting and traveling along these routes.

A must-do is a traditional Cape Malay meal at one of the restaurants, or a Cape Malay cooking course with one of the expert locals. Pangolins on the other hand are native to Southern Africa and South Asia.

Both species eat similarly, ie termites, ants and larvae. The Armadillo does eat fruit and invertebrates as well. Both dig for their food. Pangolins will also peel bark from the trees for insects. Our Pangolin doesn’t have teeth but rather relies on his long sticky tongue to catch and swallow his food whole…that tongue is more than 40cm in length.

That said, of the two species, the pangolin is closer to death’s door. Due to their popularity in traditional medicines, make believe cures, and delicate meat, pangolins represent one of the most heavily trafficked animals in the world, and most of the 8 species face extinction. 4 of these species are from Africa.

To defend themselves against predators – sadly not humans! - the Pangolin can curl into an armour plated ball due to his unique overlapping scale ‘system’. Only a few species of Armadillo can curl into a ball, as their armour is too tight and doesn’t individually overlap. The Pangolin can also excrete a noxious chemical from anal glands. At least the Armadillo will try and run away(at great speed) in to cover or will even try and dig a hole.

The bad news is, that especially the Pangolin, is severely threatened by extinction because of harvesting and smuggling of their scales and their meat!

Over a period of 4 years over 200 tonnes of scales were confiscated in seizures. This is only a fraction of what is actually smuggled. The biggest culprits seems to be Vietnam and China, where most of the scales are being shipped to.

What can we do to help the Pangolin’s plight?

Report sightings

Where to view a Pangolin?

This should be on every game viewers’ top list of animals to see. It is very difficult to find. In South Africa pangolins inhabit the areas of Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and parts of North-West Province. Then also in Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.

Let us take you to specific places and lodges where we can view these endangered but fantastic mammals.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2023, Out & About Africa</rights>

Aardvark, you ugly thing!

Earthy yes! Aardvarks use their large front claws to dig holes at a rate of 600mm in 15 seconds so they can quickly get to their favourite meal: termites and ants. Aardvarks have long, sticky tongues, which can be up to 30 centimeters long. They can weigh up to 65kg. Being nocturnal, each night they are able to dig up termite mounds, ant nests and slurp up and swallow tens of thousands of insects.

Their night vision is very good and they use those big ears to hear, and loooong noses to sniff out their food at night. During the day though, these cute uglies are a bit useless and do not see so well – apparently they’re also colour blind.

At night it travels 10–30 km, ambling along familiar paths in a zigzag fashion, pausing frequently to sniff and press its snout against the soil. Fleshy sensory organs on the nasal septum probably detect tiny underground movements. With its strong claws the aardvark can rapidly open a cement-hard termite mound. The nostrils are squeezed shut to keep out flying dust.

A thick hide protects the aardvark from insect bites and stings. If threatened while away from a sheltering burrow, an aardvark can dig its way out of sight in five minutes. An acute sense of hearing protects it from being surprised by predators, which include pythons, lions, leopards, and hyenas. If a predator tries to dig it out of its burrow, the aardvark rapidly moves soil to block the tunnel behind itself. When attacked it slashes with its formidable front claws.

These Earth Pigs are still quite widespread but they are very difficult to spot, being nocturnal and naturally shy! Basically all over Sub-Saharan Africa in the wild.

Their biggest threat are, per usual, humans! Many farmers and rural folk don’t like the fact that they dig holes everywhere. Also, poisoning of fields and crops ruin the insect population, thus their ‘hunting grounds’ are diminishing.

The AARDVARK is a must see on your game viewing/animal spotting list!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2023, Out & About Africa</rights>

To travel with or without a guide?

When to travel with a Tour Guide:

Having little time

When stopping for a quick excursion at a ‘hot spot’ or interesting place, it makes sense to arrange a knowledgeable guide to condense the trip for you.

When revisiting a place.

If you are visiting a location you have visited countless times before— hire a guide who can give you an offbeat look at a familiar place. A talented guide with a heap of local knowledge will have something to offer even those who think they’re sick of a particular place.

When visiting dangerous or chaotic urban locations.

If your destination has a reputation for dangerous or unpredictable street life — hiring a good tour guide can not only save you time, but also keep you safe and out of tight spots.

When visiting extremely popular locations.

A good tour guide will always know the best hours to visit attractions, when prices are best, which places you can skip, how to avoid rush hour, what is closed or under construction, and any number of tricks and tactics that will help you get the most out of a heavily visited location. You can also inquire if the guide has special access or rates. He will also know which times to visit when not busy, or to take a private tour.

On long stays

When you are staying for more than a few days in the same location — let’s say you have a two-week vacation rental in Cape Town — consider hiring a tour guide for the first few days to help you get your bearings early in your trip … or perhaps merely to get all the touristy stuff out of the way. Alternately, you can hire a guide late in your stay when you have exhausted the obvious attractions and want to seek out a deeper, more informed or more intimate knowledge of a place.

When visiting historic destinations.

In places that are exceptionally rich in historical or cultural significance, an expert tour guide can offer a depth of experience and knowledge that goes beyond guidebook snippets or plaque-reading. A good guide can explain the stories behind the complex carvings or drawings on a rock face or cave.

On an adventure trip.

Safaris, mountain climbing, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, white-water rafting … unless you are an absolute expert at your chosen adventure, hiring a guide may be a matter of life and death. White-water rafting on the Zambezi or Orange rivers, piloting a fishing boat back to port in a storm, diving off Aliwal Shoal with sharks,…these are not are not like hiring a rowboat on Knysna Lagoon, and no one should treat it as such. Even if you are an old hand at the particular skill in question, it’s still a good idea to hire a guide who knows the local area and can help you navigate an unfamiliar place.

When language barriers are high.

When visiting a place where you do not speak the language and the locals are extremely unlikely to speak yours — a local tour guide who does speak your language can be invaluable in countless ways. When choosing a guide, try to chat with the guide by phone in advance to determine how strong his or her command of your language really is.

To hand off the logistics of travel.

The hassles of obtaining tickets, making reservations, checking operating hours, figuring out options when you have problems — all of this is easy stuff for a good tour guide. If you are on vacation and don’t want to have these mundane tasks on your plate while traveling, hire a guide to take them on for you.

When you don’t want to drive.

There are any number of reasons not to want to drive while traveling — you don’t want to spend your vacation getting lost, you can’t read the road signs, you’re not confident driving on the opposite side of the road, your spouse is a terrible co-pilot and you just want to have fun instead of arguing. Hiring a tour guide to do the driving for you can save you a lot of headaches and unwanted distractions. Especially places like Namibia where the distances are vast and the road conditions require your full attention.

On hikes or nature excursions.

Doing hiking trails like the Oystercatcher Trail, where traversing private Reserves, dangerous cliffs, tidal pools etc…having a guide is a non-brainer.

The intertidal zones of any coastal walk in Southern Africa will surprise everyone with the teeming life and eco-systems.

Experiencing any place in Nature that looks ‘normal’ to everyone else – will come alive once you have Local guide to point out all the special animals and plants. Case in point being the Namib dunes, that seem devoid of life but contain mini eco-communities that sustain an abundance of species.

Walking in the African bush

Probably one of the most stimulating acts out there…but not to be attempted without qualified Trail Guides(yes, at least 2 of them). Having close encounters with not only the Big 5, but any animal, insect, serpent or Arachnid out there, is probably one of the most life enhancing and fulfilling experiences.

When You Shouldn’t, or don’t need to hire a Tour Guide:

When you’re traveling loose with no real agenda

When you are traveling in an open-ended and open-minded way, hiring a tour guide can remove opportunities for spontaneity and luck (both good and bad, of course). If you want to hang loose, do it — you don’t need to hire anyone to help you.

When revisiting after having already used a guide.

When you return to ground you have already covered with a guide, it may be time to venture and find your own hidden treasures, rather than having someone show you a map.

When traveling solo.

Traveling alone gives you plenty of opportunities to interact with locals and allows you to improvise in a way that hiring a guide might hinder. (That said, in places where security is an issue, a guide can offer solo travelers some degree of protection.)

When you have a lot of activities planned.

If you’re already heavily scheduled, avoid adding to your sightseeing obligation by hiring someone to help you pack in even more stuff.

When you do not want to be on a schedule.

Sometimes travel isn’t about sightseeing or investigating history — sometimes it is purely a time to unwind. If this is the case, having a guide who will rouse you from the balcony of your hotel room and force you to get dressed and go “experience” things is simply counterproductive.

When in a very small place.

Let’s face it, you don’t need a guide to take you around a place like Whidbey Island in Washington; you need a bike.

When you want quiet time to yourself.

More than just pointing the way around a place, a good tour guide engages his or her clients on many levels — with conversation, storytelling and humor. If you are feeling antisocial or just want to be left alone for a few days, hiring an enthusiastic tour guide is probably not your best option.

When you want to practice a language

If you want to challenge your language skills with complete immersion, hiring a guide who speaks English can create a buffer that will undermine any attempt to see if you make the grade in a foreign language. If immersion is your goal, force yourself to operate and communicate without the safety net of a (paid) native speaker at your side. (One caveat here: Practicing a language one-on-one with a dedicated tour guide who is willing to speak to you entirely in his or her native language may be better — and more affordable — than a language school.)

<rights>Copyright (c) 2023, Out & About Africa</rights>

Packing for your trip to Southern Africa

1. Seasonal Clothing

South Africa is an ideal place to visit during any time of year, but because the country is in the Southern Hemisphere, your seasons will likely be reversed. Pack lightweight summer apparel from November through March, when temperatures typically reach 30-40° C (86-104° F).
Include a few t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, shorts, cotton pants, and a light jacket. Bathing suit and sunscreen.
Pack warmer clothes from June through August, when evening temperatures can dip down into the single digits C (around 40° F).
Bottom line is…pack to be able to layer up.

Buffs and sarongs/kimono’s are extremely handy.

3 pairs of shoes: Light comfortable all weather training shoes, Sturdy hiking boots(already worn in!) and comfortable sandals/flip flops.

Sunglasses. Glass lenses are way better as they won’t scratch as easily with the dust, especially on open Game Drive vehicles.

On Safari, sturdy and worn in Hiking Boots.

A hat that fits securely on your head.

Women may want to add a sports bra, especially for Game Drives on bumpy gravel roads…what is known as an African massage!

2. Electronics

a Camera and spare batteries, your chargers, adapters and extra memory cards.

Binoculars or a telephoto camera lens.

Cell phone and charger. Contact your service provider before your trip to make sure your phone will work locally in South Africa. It may be necessary to “unlock” the phone and purchase an international roaming package. Local sim cards are freely available. If you have an extra mobile phone bring it, so as you can stay in touch and online without having to ‘roam’.

Should you take laptops, remember to get a Multi adapter.

Hair dryers - most hotels and lodges do supply.

3. Download a Map

Data plans in South Africa are extremely expensive and eat up data faster than you’d expect, so it’s best to have the map already downloaded onto your phone so you can always look up directions. Try Maps.me and pre-download the required maps. This you can then use offline:
https://maps.me/

4. Drivers License

Good to know: If your Drivers Permit is in any other language than English, you will need to apply for an International Drivers licence before you arrive.

5. Medical Essentials

The Centers for Disease Control say the relative risk of visitors contracting malaria in South Africa is “low” but still recommends taking precautions to limit mosquito bites. Insect repellent is a must, most hotels do also supply in the rooms.
Do contact your doctors for anti-malaria medication prescriptions before entering South Africa. Whenever possible, sleep under the mosquito netting provided by your hotel or lodge. Especially during sunset and sunrise use repellent liberally.

Note on Malaria – the higher risk areas will always be around towns and villages where there is more dirty stagnant water AND many more people that could help carry the virus.
When returning home after your Southern Africa visit and you feel flu-ey, headaches and fevers – IMMEDIATELY go to your Doctor and inform him that you were in potential Malaria areas!

6. Yellow Fever Vaccinations

You are required to have a yellow fever vaccination for South Africa if you’ve visited at-risk areas (mainly African and South American countries).

Please visit:
https://www.southafrica.net/gl/en/travel/article/yellow-fever-entry-requirements

7. Visas

Check this link for Visa exempt countries to South Africa:
http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/immigration-services/exempt-countries

8. South Africa Packing Checklist

Here’s a brief summary of the essentials for any Southern Africa packing list:

ID documents (passport, driver’s license, visa)

Money, credit cards

Appropriate seasonal clothing and undergarments

Bathing suit, sunscreen

Sunglasses, hat

Basic toiletries

Cameras, batteries

Laptop, cell phone, chargers

Power outlet adapter

Insect repellent

Anti-malaria medication, if desired

Insulated Water Bottle – 350 - 500ml

Bandanna or Buff
If you have visited before – go and have another great and lekker time…feed your Soul!
If you have not been here before, you are soooo fortunate, because there is so much to look forward to!

Below are some basic tips and advice on how and what to pack for a purpose:

Before You Pack:

Check with your airline and travel agent to determine the current luggage allowance to your destination.
For Custom rules and regulations, check with the Embassy from the country you plan to visit. Or you can check with the specific accommodation/tour company that you plan to stay at or use. They should be aware of the current rules at the specific time you are traveling.

Buy Locally:

Some participants may provide an option to buy supplies locally. This information will be posted on their individual page. We support buying locally whenever possible.

School Supplies:

To save space, take the following items out of their original packaging and place them in the lightest possible paper or fabric resealable bags: pens, pencils, erasers, individual pencil sharpeners, solar calculators, and protractors. Many countries have now banned plastic bags, even reusable ones .
The following items should be kept in their original packaging to prevent breakage: crayons, chalk, and coloured pencils. Plastic and wooden rulers should be wrapped in bubble wrap to prevent breakage. Games such as Scrabble®, Connect Four®, Dominoes® and Bananagrams® should be left in their original packages.

Medical Supplies:

Be sure to check the Customs regulations of the country you are visiting if you plan to take any requested medications, as what is allowed varies by country. Even over-the-counter medications may not be allowed in some countries. Any medicines that you take should have an expiration date at least eight months after the time you are taking them.
Expensive items such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, etc., should be put in plastic or fabric resealable bags and packed in your carry-on luggage.
The following new items should be taken out of their original packaging and placed in the lightest possible paper or fabric resealable bags: Band-Aids, bandages and any other items where the weight would be reduced by eliminating the original packaging. Many countries have now banned plastic bags, even reusable ones .

Soccer Balls:

Soccer balls should be deflated by moistening an inflation needle and carefully inserting it into the valve. After the needle is inserted, gently apply pressure to the ball until it is deflated. Remove the needle and tape it to the deflated ball. The deflated balls can be stacked to save space. Soft items such as socks can also be positioned in the cavities. Each deflated soccer ball will weigh about 1 lb (0.45 kg).
For your convenience, pack all items so they can be easily located within your luggage and dropped off when you arrive at your destination.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2023, Out & About Africa</rights>

10 Unique Things to do in the Garden Route that you can't do in Europe

1. Experience the Highest bungy in the World in Tsitsikamma

Offering one of Earth’s highest bungee jumps, the Bloukrans Bridge arcs 710 feet (216 meters above the Bloukrans River in Tsitsikamma National Park. Its slender-looking span impresses, but travelers come for the zipline, skywalk, rappelling—and most of all—the bungee, which drops more than 650 feet (200 meters with 5 seconds of free fall.

The view from Africa’s highest bridge captures all the majesty and tranquility of the Bloukrans River valley. Your experience starts with a zipline out to the to top of the bridge arch. The bungy jump makes use of a pendulum system to ensure the smoothest, most comfortable bungee jump possible. After the initial freefall, you are pulled into a giant pendulum motion and then into the big rebound.

Jumpers are secured in a full-body harness combined with a separate ankle connection to the bungy cord. For the last 25 years we have kept all our jumpers safe and secure.

2. Experience a Moonlight Meander near Sedgefield

Sedgfield is known as the slowest town in South Africa. Here things are taken easy, people live a happy-go-lucky life and they live their lives according to nature. Beautiful beaches can be enjoyed and when night falls, it's time to head to Swartvlei Beach where the magic happens! On the Moonlight Meander, you’ll see things you never thought existed. This nocturnal tour at spring low tide showcases the intriguing antics of reclusive marine species as they venture out under the protection of darkness.
The guided tour is perfect for curious adults and children alike. Your adventure of discovery takes you from Swartvlei Beach to the tidal pools of Gericke’s point, about 1km away. Along the way, local marine biologist Judy Dixon shows and shares the wonders of a once in a nighttime safari.

3. Zip along the longest over-ocean zipline in the World in Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay marks one end of the Garden Route, about four hours’ drive east from Cape Town. For those who like to pack in the activities, this is a perfect stop.

At 1,150 metres, the Mossel Bay Zipline claims to be the world’s longest over-ocean zipline; you can reach up to 55 miles an hour flying 90 metres above the waves.

4. Dive with Great White Sharks in Mossel Bay

Shark Cage Diving in Mossel Bay is one of our most unique exhilarating adventures you will come across. Diving with Great White Sharks is not only adrenalin pumping, but you also get to see a different side of these magnificent animals.

The activity is very safe. The cage is attached to the side of the boat and can take up to 6 people at once. You also do not need to be a qualified diver to take part in this activity.

5. Drive through Seven Passes from George to Knysna

The Seven Passes Road is the oldest direct road link between George and Knysna. The road which traverses seven passes was engineered by Thomas Charles John Bain and Adam de Smidt. It was completed around 1883 and is situated just south of the Outeniqua Mountains. One of the easiest ways to take in the glory of the towering mountains, indigenous forests, rolling hills and rivers of this section of South Africa’s Garden Route all at once, is by car. And the most impressive route to take is, by far, the Seven Passes Road. So, fill up your tank, get your driving music ready and make sure that your camera, cell phone, or whatever else you use to take photos, is fully charged.

The route swerves through thick forest, over streams, rivers and gorges, and across rolling farmlands. The Seven Passes Road is so remarkably extraordinary that it has been declared as a national monument, along with its historic bridges.

The Passes consists of:

Kaaimans River Pass

Silwer River Pass

Touw River Pass

Hoogekraal Pass

Karatara Pass

Homtini Pass

Phantom Pass

6. Snorkel with Seals in Plettenberg Bay

When it comes to things to do on the Garden Route, snorkeling with seals could easily be, without exaggeration, the most joyous things you will do. These sea mammals are amongst the friendliest creatures on the planet and love a bit of human interaction. Think of them as water dogs, with similar playful traits and pleasant personalities. 30 minutes may sound like a long time to be snorkeling but parting ways with those adorable seals will not be easy. Tropical fish are also on the menu…the viewing menu, of course.

7. Visit the Rastafarian Community in Knysna

The Rastafarian people are members of the friendliest, most welcoming and accepting religious cultures you are bound to encounter. Taking a tour of Judah Square in Knysna is the best way to explore this unique community and to learn about their way of life.

South Africa’s rainbow nation is made up of many different cultures and religions, many of which are misunderstood. The Judah Square Rastafarian community tour is the most entertaining way to meet one of these groups on a very personal level.

The trained tour guides will tell you about the Rastafari beliefs and their way of life – while you encounter it first-hand. This tour is not a history lesson or a boring recitation of facts – the guides are animated, passionate and eager to share their unique lifestyles with you.

8. Experience the Magic of the Knysna Forest

The forests of Knysna, with their giant yellowwood trees, abundance of birdlife, and elusive elephants, hold a magical appeal for travellers. Enchanting walkers, cyclists, 4x4 enthusiasts, birders, and families, many visitors travel to the Garden Route to experience their ethereal beauty.

The forests actually extend way beyond Knysna, covering a total area of 300 000 hectares, and are home to various animals, including the tree hyrax, Samango monkey, blue duiker, giant golden mole, honey badger, and the long-tailed forest shrew. Caracal and leopards have even been spotted in the forests.

The Knysna elephants

At the end of the 18th-century elephant herds with numbers in the hundreds used to roam these forests. Unfortunately, their numbers have dwindled over the years and at one time it was thought they must be extinct in the area. Evidence suggests however that at least one, and possibly four or five, of these great beasts, still live in the forests. A photograph was even recently taken of an elephant poking out from behind the trees!

The photo above is what is to believed to be the last living free-roaming elephant in the Knysna Forest - a lone Female (The Matriarch)

Knysna timber

As one would expect, the Knysna forests were historically important for their natural timber resource. The first shipment of timber left this area in 1788 and ever since the sprawling forests of the Garden Route were drastically reduced as their trees were used for fuel, construction, the building of wagons and boats, heating, furniture, and more. With the support of the British settler and timber merchant, George Rex, Knysna became a shipping port in 1818, giving easy access to its extensive forests of hardwoods such as stinkwood, yellowwood, and hard pear. In the 1890s Knysna’s timber industry was the main income source for the town. Visitors can still see some of the equipment from the old Thesen sawmill and boatyard on Thesen Island today.

Mining in the Knysna forests

The Knysna forests were the site of the first Gold mining boom in South Africa. Although the boom was very short-lived. Once word spread that an Ostrich farmer had discovered gold in the area, the town of Millwood sprung up pretty much overnight with six hotels, houses, and shops. Today, travellers to Knysna can pay a visit to the Millwood House Museum.

The entrance to an old mine

Knysna Seahorsers

Knysna Estuary boasts the highest biodiversity in comparison to any other estuary in South Africa? It’s a literal treasure trove of flora and fauna. Of all the critters that reside in the estuary, it is the little Knysna seahorse (Hippocampus capensis) that is the most celebrated.

Seahorses belong to the genus Hippocampus, which comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘hippos’ (meaning horse) and ‘campus’ (meaning sea monster). The Knysna seahorse is just one of more than 45 different species found worldwide, but it’s particularly special because it is the only known true estuarine seahorse species in the world and is very rare indeed.

Its distribution is extremely fragmented. Knysna seahorses are endemic to the Garden Route and have only ever been found in three local estuaries, namely, the Keurbooms River estuary in Plettenberg Bay, the Knysna Estuary, and the estuarine portion of the Swartvlei system in Sedgefield. Owing to this limited geographical range, its small overall population size and the fact that Knysna seahorses are particularly vulnerable to adverse shifts in their natural environment, it is the first seahorse to be classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This makes the protection of this local fish species and the Knysna Estuary as a whole, so critical. (Yip, believe it or not, these little cuties are fish – they breathe through gills and have a swim bladder).

9. Drive the oldest hand-built pass from coast to desert (Montagu Pass)

The pass was named after John Montagu, Colonial Secretary of the Cape in the 1840s, whose enthusiasm for good roads resulted in a program of construction in Southern Africa.

Some 250 convicts started with the construction of the pass and it was opened for traffic in December 1847. The passage over the Outeniqua Mountains, which used to take a full three days over the Cradock Pass (another one of the four passes), could then be accomplished within a few hours.

Henry Fancourt White, an experienced road engineer from Australia, was in charge of the work. His name is perpetuated in Fancourt Estate. On the ascent from George, one passes the Old Tollhouse where once the toll of two pennies per wheel and two pence per ox and so forth had to be paid. It has been declared a National Monument and for years now “friends of the tollhouse” have planned restoration and even a tea garden, but with our visit it was still closed and non-operational.

"Keurrivier se brug" further on has also been declared a National Monument. The original stone wall still exists all along the pass. As you drive you will pass the narrowest part of the pass with overhanging cliffs called "Die Noute". Here wagons could not pass abreast. Further on is "Regop Trek", the steepest part of the road. Where the road passes underneath the railway bridge (also one of the four passes), is "Stinkhoutdraai" where stinkwood trees used to grow in profusion.

10. Pick and eat your own wild oysters on the Oystercatcher Trail

One of the first to introduce the Slackpacking concept - a World-renowned trail, described as one of the top 50 hikes worldwide by the likes of the BBC and Getaway, also featured in major media brands and productions.

Hike the largely undeveloped South Cape(Garden Route) coastline between Mossel Bay and Gourikwa Private Nature Reserve, crossing the spectacular Gouritz River along the way.

The Mossel Bay area features the Big 5 of the ocean being a World-class biodiversity hotspot. During the mild cooler months, Whales come in to give birth in the quiet protected bays. Dazzling us with their displays of breaching and lob-tailing. The combination of bird and marine life as well as a great variety of Fynbos species, makes it a nature enthusiast paradise!

Find, pick and eat your own oysters en-route or take them with you to enjoy with some salt, lemon juice and bubbly after a long hike!
