Building Up Steam!

Posted on Thu October 23, 2025.

My knowledge about the digital world is admittedly limited, but one thing I’ve come to realize is that being “profiled” online isn’t always a bad thing. Thanks to my occasional likes and shares on social media, I’ve found myself pleasantly surprised by the content the algorithms have been sending my way — and this time, it’s something truly special.

For years, I was under the impression that Rovos Rail stood alone as the ultimate steam train experience in Southern Africa. And to be fair, what Rohan Vos and his incredible team have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. They’ve built a world-class brand — “The Pride of Africa” — that embodies the golden age of travel while keeping a vital piece of history alive. A quick search online proves it: Rovos Rail is synonymous with elegance, romance, and the rhythmic magic of rail travel across Africa’s breathtaking landscapes.

But here’s the delightful surprise — Rovos isn’t the only steam rail experience out there! As I started exploring further, I discovered a growing community of passionate people and organizations across South Africa who are working tirelessly to revitalize and preserve steam rail heritage. From short nostalgic trips to full-day excursions, these experiences are often beautifully affordable and bursting with authentic charm.

It’s heartening to see how the love for steam travel continues to inspire a new generation of enthusiasts — people who not only appreciate the engineering marvels of the past but also recognize their cultural and historical importance.

South Africa’s Steam Rail Revival

Across the country, several dedicated groups have taken up the torch to keep steam travel alive — each with its own unique flavour and following.

🚂 Ceres Rail Company (Western Cape)

Based in Cape Town, Ceres Rail has captured the hearts of families and photographers alike. Their weekend journeys through the Cape Winelands — particularly the scenic run to Elgin — are a treat for the senses. With vintage coaches, a working steam locomotive, and a relaxed, festive atmosphere, it’s a perfect day out that feels like stepping back in time.
It was the power of steam that drove the expansion of the British Empire during the Victorian Era, and the Cape Colony was no exception.
The first steam-train line in the Cape was completed in 1862, and ran from Cape Town to Eerste River. Within a year, the route had been extended to include Stellenbosch and Wellington.
Gradually, a network of railway lines spread throughout the province, managed by Cape Government Railways; while in the north, the Netherlands-South African Railway Company facilitated the expansion of the railway network in the-then independent South African Republic.
By the time the four provinces merged to form a nation in 1910, an expansive national railway system had effectively been established.
The Ceres Railway track was originally built at the turn of the 20th century, starting in July 1910 and was completed in May 1912. The line was built using second-hand material.
Part of Ceres Rail Company’s mission is to help preserve and promote South African Rail Heritage, which involves restoring and refurbishing old locomotives and coaches. We love sharing this with both young and old, which is why, since 2016, we have been determined to “Let History Transport You.”

🚂 Atlantic Rail – Garden Route

Atlantic Rail, now officially known as Southern Cape Railway, offers vintage steam and diesel train excursions in South Africa's Garden Route. Owned and operated by the Ekström brothers, the company provides nostalgic rail journeys in the greater Mossel Bay area.

Born and bred in Mossel Bay with a shared passion for steam locomotives & trains, the three Ekström brothers identified the need to afford the locals and holidaymakers the opportunity to experience a nostalgic train journey of a now bygone era, behind a restored steam locomotive.
After years of negotiations and discussions, they are now able to offer the Southern Cape an authentic steam train experience in the greater Mossel Bay area.

Keeping the Fire Burning

These operators, along with countless volunteers and railway enthusiasts, are ensuring that South Africa’s steam legacy remains alive and accessible. What started as a niche passion project has grown into a nationwide movement — a reminder that heritage can be both preserved and enjoyed.
Hats off to everyone involved — the engineers, volunteers, restorers, and dreamers — who are quite literally keeping the fire burning. Through continued public interest and support, we can ensure that the soulful whistle of the steam locomotive continues to echo across South Africa’s valleys and veld for generations to come.

Out & About Investigating

Read between the Spots Cape Mountain and Savannah Leopard In the shadowy stillness of the savannah, a ghost slips through golden grass sleek, bold, and built for speed. But far to the south, where mountains cut the sky and the fynbos clings to stone, another leopard moves stockier, secretive, and silent as mist. Two predators, same species, worlds apart. This is the story of their divide.
